Oshawa Domestic Violence Lawyers

Domestic abuse is a serious crime, but unfortunately occurs in marriages and relationships every day. Domestic violence includes any use of physical or sexual force, actual or threatened, by your partner or ex-partner. Threatening, hitting, kicking, punching, pushing, stalking and harassing another person are examples of abuse. A person committing these acts can be arrested, charged, convicted, and jailed. Domestic violence can also include threats to harm children, other members of a family, pets and property or can take the form of psychological/emotional abuse, verbal abuse, and economic/financial abuse. Although not always considered criminal offenses, these forms of abuse are also serious. If you are being abused by your partner, you may feel alone, have trouble talking to others about the abuse, and may fear for yourself and/or your children. However, you should know that if you or your children are experiencing domestic violence, you are not alone. There is help available for you.

Protecting Yourself from Domestic Abuse

If your spouse is abusive or violent, take all steps necessary to keep yourself and your children safe. Once you have done so, you can then turn your mind to addressing the legal aspects of leaving your abusive partner. If you feel you are in immediate danger, call 911. If you are unable to call 911, leave your home, or shout for help – someone else may hear you and call 911. If you have been physically or sexually assaulted and are not in immediate danger, you can and should call the police. The police, with your permission, can call the Victim Crisis Assistance and Referral Services (VCARS). VCARS staff and volunteers can provide you with short-term assistance, such as emotional support, financial assistance through the Victim Quick Response Program, and referral to community agencies. Once you and your children are safe from harm, you may start to think about the legal implications of ending your relationship and leaving your abusive partner. It is at that point in time that you may want to consider consulting with a family lawyer.
